Kitten Steam Engine Ornament

The Wollenmann Home Swiss Chalet style home, built in 1903 Florenz Kitten, Sr. (1840-1920) was an avid tinkerer. Born in Germany, the son of a wooden shoe maker, he emigrated to the United States and settled in Ferdinand at age 10.

Florenz turned his talent for mechanical design into a thriving manufacturing business, the Kitten Machine Shop (later the Kitten Foundry and Machine Works). He obtained several patents for his own inventions and often improved on other inventor’s designs. From the 1880s through 1940, a total of 224 engines were built. Today, there are about 20 that still exist. Kitten Steam Engines and related equipment were noted for their exceptional quality. In its heyday, the foundry was Ferdinand’s largest industry.
