Monastery Immaculate Conception Ornament

The Wollenmann Home Swiss Chalet style home, built in 1903 Monastery Immaculate Conception, home of the Sisters of St. Benedict, was founded by four Benedictine sisters from Covington, Kentucky, who arrived in Ferdinand on August 20, 1867, to begin teaching German immigrants. Construction on the present monastery church, one of the architectural wonders of southern Indiana, was begun in 1915 and, after delays because of World War I, was completed in 1924. The sisters began a major restoration of their church in 2001. The Ferdinand Benedictine community is one of the largest Benedictine communities of women in the United States. This ornament, depicting the monastery church, is being issued for the first time during the sister’s 2002 Summer Social, which commemorates the 135th anniversary of the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand.
