Ferdinand Fire Department Ornament
Ferdinand was a community on the grow in 1905. There was talk of a railroad and newspaper, but first the men in this Southern Indiana town decided it was time to incorporate and organize a Fire Department.
As one of its earliest acts, the newly elected Town Board agreed to give the Fire Chiefs job to the Town Marshal, who also automatically earned the job of Street Commissioner. This person would then appoint 15 men between the ages of 21 and 50 to serve on the Fire Brigade.
For the first few years, three hose carts were kept in separate locations in the three town wards and the Fire Bell would ring a different signal for each ward. All fire brigade members would rush to the correct ward — probably by following the smoke. When water lines and hydrants were installed, the Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department moved into a new era. Fire fighting has changed considerably in the 100 years since the department was founded. Today the Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department calls two different stations home. Each station is filled with state of the art equipment.
And yet, the firefighters of today also treasure the memorabilia of yesteryear and are proud of the town’s 1875 fire truck (middle edges on ornament), 1907 hose cart (bottom), and 1914 chemical wagon (top) still in their possession.
Congratulations to the Ferdinand Volunteer Fire Department on their first 100 years — and cheers to the next 100!
