Ferdinand News Ornament
What happens to a community without a voice?
Sometimes, the community withers and dies.
This was the fear of the Town Fathers in Ferdinand, Indiana, circa 1900. After much consideration, members of the Commerce Club decided it was time to provide a voice; and they determined the best way to do this would be to publish a community newspaper.
The first rolled off the presses on May 25, 1906.
Within months, the Commerce Club agreed to sell the newspaper to Henry Haake, the pressman turned editor who was making such a success of the aptly named Ferdinand News. Henry stayed at the helm until his death in 1944, at which time his daughter, Agnes, took over until sons, Oscar and J. Roy Haake, returned from overseas military service.
The brothers operated the newspaper until their retirement in 1990, when they sold it to Richard Tretter and his sister Miriam Ash, along with their spouses, Kathy and Paul. The Haakes believed Ferdinand natives, Richard and Miriam, would understand the community and deliver the kind of news its citizens desired.
The two couples have tried to deliver. As an added bonus, the newspaper has consistently won awards on the state and national level for fair and accurate reporting of news, entertaining features, and an exceptional sports sections.
Congratulations to the Ferdinand News on its first 100 years — here’s hoping for another century of success!
