Wollenmann House Swiss Chalet Ornament
The Wollenmann House, located at 1150 Main Street, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Ferdinand and Dubois County.
Featuring distinctive architecture — Arts and Craft style with Swiss chalet-like characteristics — the residences pictureseque Germanic quality, reflecting the regions dominant ethnic heritage, was replicated on a more modest scale elsewhere in the community and the county.
Dr. Alois Wollenmann, who was Swiss, commissioned plans for his dream home from his native land in 1903.
His personal story is almost as fascinating as the house he built. In addition to his devoted service as a physician, Dr. Wollenmann operated the local drug store, named Adler Apotheke (Eagle Apothecary), managed the post office when he was named Postmaster by a Republican governor and, as if that wasnt enough, owned and operated a watch repair shop.
Dr. Alois Wollenmann was a Civil Rights activist before anyone had ever heard of Civil Rights. Bucking early 20th century norms, he treated Native Americans and employed African Americans.
Preserved intact by successive generations of Wollenmanns on its nearly city-block-sized lot, the house, with its distinctive gingerbread trim, claims broad recognition in the region.
This ornament comes packaged in a green box with a sketch of the ornament on the outside. Perfect for gift-giving.
