Ferdinand Baseball Ornament

Ferdinand Baseball ornament"Take me out to the ball game "could have been the theme for the Town of Ferdinand during the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Baseball might be as American as apple pie, but the Germans who populated the area couldn't get enough of the sport — baseball for them was as German-American as apple strudel!

Early Ferdinand teams included the Black Sox (1890), the Ferdinand Blue Clippers (circa 1900), the Scrubs (1903), the Ferdinand Reds (1904-08), the Ferdinand Grays (1913-15), Ferdinand Giants (1920-22 and 1924-28) and the Ferdinand Cardinals (1930-1982, reorganized in 1988 but defunct since 1993). Other Ferdinand teams were the Pirates and the Harvest Queens, plus the Ferdinand American Legion teams, Liniment League and Forest Park High School teams, as well as many, many Pee Wee, Little, Senior and Pony League youth teams.

Before there was an honest-to-goodness ball park, they played in a vacant lot near St. Ferdinand rectory, in Woebkenberg bottoms and later in the southwest corner pasture on the Woebkenberg farm. When games were scheduled, the cattle generally grazing there were chased into another field — usually across the road. A 60-foot grandstand was eventually erected on the property, and Scouts or young men would direct both cars and walkers since there were no sidewalks. Fans had to pay to enter the fenced area. Games were played in this spot from the early 1900s until 1940, when the ballfield, which is now Fifth Street Park, was purchased and used by the teams.
